Germany, 1777 Hand-colored celestial chart for the month of March from Bode's Anleitung zur Kenntniss des gestirnten Himmels (12 charts are located at Tab 3) first published in 1772. Among the constellation illustrated are Gemini, Orion, Taurus, Canus Major, and Canus Minor. Bode was the astronomer of the Academy of Science in Berlin and the director of the Berlin Observatory. After Bode, celestial atlases became less artistic and more utilitarian, dispensing with pictorial representation of constellations and replacing them with straight lines to to define boundaries.
