Book Description
B.B. Hopkins & Co, 1807. First Edition Thus 1st American. Hardcover. Fair to Good-. B.B. Hopkins & Co. premium edition of The Complete Navigator: Or an Easy and Familiar Guide to the Theory and Practice of Navigation, with All the Requisite Tables. illustrated with engravings. by Andrew Mackay to which is added a Concise System of Calculations for Finding the Longitude at Sea by the Lunar Observations. by P. Delmar. Full contemporary mottled calf with red leather label and title in gilt although darkened. First American edition of this important navigational guide with sections on: the mariner's compass and other instruments; sounding and the tides; Gunter's scale; sailings; sea charts; description and use of Hadley's quadrant and sextant; a sample sea journal; methods of surveying coasts and harbors; weather forecasting; and much more. This American edition contains updated navigational information for the American coast and West Indies. The last 220 pages of the book consist of navigational tables. The book has 7 engraved plates showing a steering compass and other navigational instruments; Hadley's quadrant and sextant; an Azimuth compass; a longitudinal map of Western Europe; and more. In the original full leather binding. The front cover is detached with corner wear esp. at the bottom, and the spine has some cracking and the ends are worn off. The text is in good condition with some minor foxing and spotting to some pages, some signatures (sections) are browned more than others - likely due to inconsistent processing in the batches of paper used (perhaps 1 in 10 pages). Lacks the front fly and starts with the 1/2 tp. There is some browning the the 1/2 tp & tp edges, and some staining to the spine edge of same continuing for several pages. Also some staining to the rear bottom corner for the last 20 or so pages. Most of the plates have moderate foxing. Any stains or foxing are light in colour and all pages are clearly readable. There is an ink address written on the rear (Ohio) contemporary with the publication. Lacks the rear fly and the rear cover is cracked at hinge & joint - though firmly attached by the bands. Mackay (1758-1809) an English mathematician and teacher of navigation, was a rival and critic of Bowditch. The plates, two of which are maps and four of which depict navigational instruments, were engraved by Benjamin Tanner, an important Philadelphia engraver who became a pioneer in bank note engraving.
