Book Description

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, (1920.) . First edition. . Good in illustrated blue cloth with black lettering - rubbing to the spine, so the lettering there is illegible, discoloration to lower corners of both boards (not affecting the pages), sturdy binding, clean contents. . A charming children's book which, in the middle of its very appealing story, also includes vivid descriptions of life "at home" during the first World War - the food and fuel shortages, the sacrifices made for the troops in France, news from the aunt who is "over there" working with the French orphans and many more interesting details. Color frontispiece and illustrated title page by Alice Preston. This copy is not only SIGNED on the dedication page by this prolific author, it is also bears the ownership INSCRIPTION and Beacon Hill address (twice) of artist Fannie Hillsmith (born 1911 and thus 9 years old when this was written.) While I have not been able to trace a direct connection between these two accomplished New England women of two different generations, it is not unlikely that Hillsmith's family, who were very prominent in the arts in the Boston area, would have known White, who was born in Keene, N.H. but lived most of her adult life in Massachusetts. That this book was valued by Hillsmith is made obvious by the duplication of her name and address: once in youthful penmanship, the second time in a more mature handwriting similar to that used in signing her paintings. Overall, this is an especially interesting copy of a relatively uncommon title by this author. 146 pp.
