General View of the Island of Philaeby ROBERTS, David
London: F. G. Moon, 1847. Original tinted lithograph done by lithographer Louise Haghe. Image area: 20 1/2 x 13 7/8 inches plus borders and caption. Triple matted (archivally) and with a marbled border. An excellent copy of this famous image.Undoubtably, Roberts' "Egypt and Nubia" is one of the finest set of prints of Egypt and Nubia ever committed to paper. Roberts very successfully evoked the heat, vastness and unworldliness of the desert while at the same time, preserving for history, views of the architectural remains to be found there. The plates were lithographed by L. Haghe with consumate skill. Roberts himself said of Haghe-"(He) has not only surpassed himself, but all that has hitherto been done of a similar nature. He has rendered the views in a style clear, simple, and unlaboured, with a masterly vigour and boldness which none but a painter like him could have transferred to stone" (Abbey).
