Bound in full contemporary tree calf, gilt lettered red leather label on flat spine. Hinges cracked but holding, old tape repair to gutter of front endpaper, browning and staining to title page, contemporary owner signature to top of title, else internally clean. MacPherson's famous, or rather, infamous heroic epic poem of Fingal ("white stranger"), heralded at the time as the Celtic equivalent of the classical writers such as Homer. The young Sir Walter Scott and Goethe were among the writers influenced.
