Book Description
London: Oxford University Press, 1938., 1938. First Edition, First Issue: Thick 8vo.: 1.9 inches. Publisher's light mustard coloured cloth, titles and designs in brown to upper and to slightly darkened spine; top edge tinted, a little foxing to others. In its original pictorial dustwrapper price clipped, lightly frayed along extremities, spine a little sunned. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, a map and 6 black and white plates. Small bookseller ink stamp to lower inner corner of f.f.e.p. Text tight. A superb example. Rare thus.dustwrapper : Another term for dust jacket, a protective and often decorative wrapper, usually made of paper which wraps around the binding of a book.
spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back.
price clipped : The portion of the dust jacket flap where the publisher prints the suggested price has been cut away. Usually this is a clean 1-2" diagonal cut made with scissors.
tight : Used to mean that the binding of a book has not been overly loosened by frequent use.
frontispiece : A portrait or illustration on the page opposing the title page.
sunned : The affected portion of the book has been discolored from exposure to the sun.
plates : Full page illustrations or photographs. Plates are printed separately from the text of the book, and bound in at production. I.e., they are not sewn as parts of gatherings.
8vo : Short for Octavo, A book whose page size is approximately 8-10 inches tall. The size is based on a sheet of paper 25 inches by 38 inches, the size of paper traditionally used by book printers, which has been folded and cut into 16 pages..
Unfortunately often misunderstood to mean 8 volumes.
Cloth : Generally refers to a hardcover with cloth covering the outside of the book covers.
