An extraordinary set, even though incomplete, of Walter de Gray Birch's 'Catalogue of Seals' with hundreds of marvelous hand-drawn and in many cases, hand-colored coats of arms in the outer margins. While some pages having no illustrations, many pages will have from one to six drawings in black-and-white and color, ranging in size from about one inch to two inches square. The coloring is clean and bright, and applied by a highly skilled artist. There are literally hundreds of drawings in Volumes II, III, and V, which deal with Great Britain, Wales and France. Volume IV, which deals with Scotland and Ireland, did not seem to interest the artist. Volume VI, which deals with Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, and other European countries, is also unillustrated but appears to have come from a different owner.

Five volumes, of six, lacking Volume I, all in the original brick-red cloth covered bindings with gilt spine titles and blindstamped boards. Volume II's front joint is cracked near to separation, the rear joint in partially cracked; Volume III, IV, and V have partially cracked joints. These same four volumes have cracked hinges, soiled and edgeworn boards, and occasional notes throughout. Volume VI is clean and undamaged, with the signatures unopened. There are a number of black-and-white plates at the rear of each volume showing five or more seals on each page. Please e-mail for detailed digital photos.. First Edition. Hard Cover.
