Boston, Mass.: Wells and Lilly, 1828 1828-1829. 2 volumes: 1 frontispiece portrait, 1 leaf of a facsimile; 23 cm. (9 inches). Full calf with black leather spine labels with spine title: Life of Gerry. Gilt-tooled spine decoration; double gilt ruled borders on all boards. Both front fixed endpapers bear labels for Sturgis Library, Barnstable [Mass.], dated April 1, 1872. Small oval stamp of that library on v. 1 half title and, faintly, on both title pages. First edition. Massachusetts politician Elbridge Gerry played an important role in the American Revolution, signing both the Articles of Confederation and the Declaration of Independence. He was elected governor of Massachusetts in 1810. In 1812 he approved a bill redistricting the state in order to give Republicans disproportionate representation in the legislature. This redistricting resulted in one county being shaped like a salamander. Political cartoons featured Gerry's head on a salamander's body, inspiring the term "gerrymander." He served as vice president under James Madison for two year until his death in 1814. In Very Good Condition: leather is rubbed, most significantly at corners; most of gilt is intact; slight loss of leather at head of spine on vol. 2; joints are solid; shadow on vol. 1 title page from frontispiece; otherwise pages are clean and bright. An attractive copy of both volumes of this important early biography of Gerry.. First Edition. Very Good.
