Book Description

Toronto,1960's Original Table Card from the legendary Colonial Tavern, Toronto, Canada, characteristically inscribed and boldly SIGNED in black ink on the verso, by the great jazz pianist and composer, "Good luck, always, Thelonious Monk".The card and signature almost certainly date to one of two appearances, Nov.1-4 1965, or Aug.21-Sept.3 1967, when the quartet played the club at the height of Monk's fame amid growing recognition of his genius, which was so long in coming. The Colonial Tavern situated at 199-201 Yonge Street in the heart of Toronto, was arguably the most famous jazz club in Canada; from its opening in 1947 until its final closure in 1978, the club played host to the greatest names in jazz and blues and rhythm & blues. The building was demolished in 1987 and is memorialized by a tiny park near the original site, with a brass commemorative plaque inscribed with more than 150 names of the luminaries who played there. The club's logo appears on the front of the table card with the printed statement: "for many years it has been our policy to bring to you the greatest names in jazz and in order to continue to do so, there are times when we have to engage groups which cost much more than others", followed by a drinks list with prices adjusted to acccomodate Monk's appearance. Tragically, by the late 1960's, increasingly burdened by illness, Monk had begun a gradual withdrawal from public life, performing infrequently, making his final studio recording in 1971, before finally lapsing into a silence which lasted until his death in 1982. Original, printed, pale yellow card, 6" by 4", hint of age toning, touch of creasing to centre and bottom corners of recto, tiny soil mark to verso, else about near fine, with a fine, unusually large and clean example of Monk's autograph. One of the most sought after of all jazz signatures, in collector's condition with a wonderful and rare jazz association. About Near Fine. J1411
