(9 3/4" x 6.5"). Hardcover, brown leather spine with 4 compartments, gold titles and decoration. Marble endpapers. Frontispiece (original full-size engraving from the French, signed in the plate by Hildibrand and Riou). All pages and 111 engravings present. There is an interesting typo on the spine: it reads "Cien [100] Mil Leguas De Viaje Submarino". Boards worn primarily at edges, scuffed. Hinges renewed. Light foxing on page edges. Provenance available. We believe that this book is not only the first complete edition of Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, but that it is also unique. This full 1869 Spanish translation appears to precede the full first edition in French (1869-1870) and in English (1873). The American editions apparently not only have abridged text, but also have cropped illustrations. As best as we can determine, Veinte mil leguas has thus far escaped the view of Verne's bibliographers because it was unique (única). According to the National Library of Spain, Don Vicente Guimerá was the translator. We do not know what relationship he might have had to Verne or Hetzel. Nonetheless, this book was published before the complete first edition in book form (1869/1870). One copy of this book is in the Spanish National Library, translated by Guimera in the same year, 1869, published by F. Rey y compª. in 8vo. format. A truly rare, and possibly unique first edition 4to. with a complete set of full-size engravings. Very good in a very fine custom leather, marble, and gilded presentation box... First Edition.
