Book desription: Philadelphia: Porter & Coates, 1876. First edition [The True First]. Very Good. A Very Good copy (some wear to the head and heel of the spine, spine darkened, some minor scuffing and shelf wear) of the rare Porter & Coates publication of Trollope's The Prime Minister. This is not only the First American Edition, but is the true First Edition. The Prime Minister (one of a limited number of Trollope titles first published in America) was published simultaneously by Harper and by Porter & Coates (on Wednesday, May 17, 1876 at 12 noon) prior to the completion of the English serial publication in Parts by Chapman & Hall, and, of course, prior the Chapman & Hall's publication of the novel in four volumes. (See Smith 37.) While the Harper edition is hard enough to find, Smith names the Porter & Coates publication of The Prime Minister as one out of four of Trollope's cloth editions noted by him to be scarce and difficult to find. Porter & Coates did not date either this or later issues. However, this copy is identical to another copy we have with a contemporary (dated) inscription and constitutes the true First Edition. A Very Good copy of an extremely difficult Trollope, and a rare opportunity for the Trollope collector.
