The Claverings by Trollope, Anthony
First edition
London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1867. First edition. Fine. A Fine copy of one of Trollope's best stories, The Claverings, in two volumes with bevelled boards, the covers being decoratively stamped in gilt and in black. There is a small black ink spot to the edge of Volume I's board, but the set is nevertheless beautiful, and the gilt is bright. The first edition has two binding states: the one having blind blocking is more common than the scarcer binding blocked in black. Sadleir believed that copies blocked in black were the first ones issued. The copy on offer here is such a copy in the preferred state (with black blocking). This is the story of Harry Clavering, an intelligent (though not necessarily wise) young man, who, after being jilted by a beautiful woman who wished to marry for money rather than for love, commits himself to another, far less glamourous, but far more true, young woman. The rich husband of his first love dies (of course) and Harry is put to the choice between the two women. The story is classic Trollope. An excellent copy of an excellent Trollope tale.
