Book description: New York: The Dial Press, 1966. First edition. Fine/fine. A very near Fine copy of Larry McMurtry's famous novel of the small-town life of youths on the difficult path to adulthood, SIGNED BY LARRY MCMURTRY on the title page. The book is virtually Fine (a couple of small smudges on the front board and light bumping to the spine) with sharp corners and bright lettering. The spine is unfaded and any shelf wear is barely detectable. The dust jacket also is very near Fine (some light soiling, a tiny closed tear at the base of the spine, and a small chip to the bottom of the rear panel). A very nice, and quite attractive, copy. Set in the small town of Thalia, Texas, the book centers around Duane, Duane's friend Sonny, and Jacy, Sonny's girlfriend who can't wait to get out of Thalia. The book is of some importance, serving as the basis for Peter Bogdanovich's highly acclaimed directorial debut in the movie of the same name. (Bogdanovich earlier had directed two minor films of no consequence: Targets, and Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women.) The 1971 film, with the screenplay co-written by McMurtry and Bogdanovich, put not only Bogdanovich, but also Cybil Shepherd, on the map. (Her acting helped too.) Filming in black and white (a technique then considered obsolete), Bogdanovich produced a gritty and authentic look that well suited McMurtry's novel. Set in Thalia (but filmed in McMurtry's hometown of Archer City), the film was was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning Oscars for Ben Johnson (Best Supporting Actor) and Cloris Leachman (Best Supporting Actress), and is remembered by all who saw it. An excellent copy of McMurtry's third novel, and, along with the Pulitzer Prize winning Lonesome Dove, one of his most famous works. SIGNED BY LARRY MCMURTRY.
