A BOOK OF TYPE AND DESIGNby Jlavsa, Oldrich
Book desription: New York, New York USA: Tudor Publishing Company. Hardcover. Solid ex-library copy. Bound in brown library buckram. From the Foreword: We present the second edition of our book dealing with roman typefaces. This time, the book is being published not only in Czech, but also as a separate edition in English. Needless to say, these two concurrently edited volumes have been prepared with even greater care and we have tried to make them even richer than the first edition. However, the second edition does not aim, any more than the first did, at including the greatest possible number of typefaces; the attention being focussed on types which are of importance, on faces that are beautiful or useful. We have of course added some of the less familiar faces, and faces which are of interest on account of their uncommon character, but this was only done to lend the book additional variety. We feel that the selection of faces presented in the first edition was not inadequate. Proof of this is the interest, and we may say, enthusiasm, with which the book was received among specialists as well as by all those interested in typefaces. We certainly had no intention to write a history of roman typefaces. When drawing upon the sources of the past we followed the course of history only insofar as it marks the line of the development of roman faces, in order to obtain a certain order in the classification according to chronological criteria, or those derived from the characteristics of various faces. The classification adopted may not be usual in typographical literature, but it suits the scope and the meaning of this book. What we had in mind was primarily a practical manual that could advise and assist typographers, type designers and lettering artists in their daily work, as well as those working with type continually or occasionally, or those directing such work, or having to take decisions concerning it. We have done our best to submit a survey of roman faces that are vivid and distinguished, bearing witness to valuable penmanship, faces which are recent or revived, recognized or unjustly forgotten, a survey of book, periodical or jobbing faces. We have not avoided letters of bold design that fall entirely outside customary form, provided they remain within the limits of good taste. 496 pages. Your order will be on its way by the next business day! . Good. 1960.
