First German edition, published concurrently with the English first edition, which was issued in monthly parts. Illustrated with 20 plates by H.K. Browne (Phiz), exactly half the number that appeared in the English version. This set collects all of the 20 parts in which the English version was issued, 10 in each volume. The parts are paginated two at a time, with five title-pages in each volume. Also contains original Lorch publisher ads. Bound in quarter cloth and marbled-paper boards, likely contemporary, with blank paper labels to the spines. Scattered foxing throughout, mostly at preliminaries; a bit of spine lean to both volumes; some rubbing to boards, slight chipping at edges. Plates all intact. A very good set. Label of German bookseller to inside front cover of both volumes.
