(7 5/8Ôoˆ x 5 1/4Ôoˆ), vi, 678pp., [8]ads, Dark blue cloth, original brown endpapers. Gilt lettering and decoration. Original dark brown end papers with previous owners name barely visable. Extremities rubbed and beginning to fray, much more so to head and heel; old bookseller very small sticker to front paste-down. Else, interior clean and bright; sound. Very good/No dust jacket. This scarce, first printing of this classic of 19th century Canadian literature, an historical novel of Quebec. Possibly the most important novel in nineteenth century English-Canadian literature., Variant A binding with ads: First text setting, Blue cover with black and gold; 8p of advertisements; , The Golden Dog was issued in February 1877. Unfortunately, Kirby received little financial benefit from his masterpiece. Because the original publishers failed to copyright the novel, its author neither received royalties nor kept control of the text. ÔoˆThe novel's action takes place just before the fall of New France, when the supporters of the popular Chien d'Or trading house, headed by the bourgeois Philibert, struggle against the decadent and corrupt Grand Company of the Intendant BIGOT. Two ill-fated romances are interwoven: that of AmÔoˆlie de Repentigny with Philibert's son, Pierre; and that of Le Gardeur (AmÔoˆlie's brother) with the self-seeking AngÔoˆlique des Meloises, who eventually persuades him to kill Philibert. This action precipitates the collapse of the colony. The novel mixes Gothic and historical romance with QuÔoˆbecois history and legend; it also provides insight into 19th-century English Canadian perceptions of French Canada's past.Ôoˆ from the Canadian Encyclopedia
