Likely the first edition, first printing (see description). 8vo, 22cm x 13.5cm, (8.75Ôoˆ x 5.5Ôoˆ) xviii, 429pp., [1 blank], [68pp. appendix of letters by Nelson]; Original elaborated tooled calf-backed spine,the unlettered spine in four gilt-decorated compartments. Original marbled boards, edges on boards chipped. Eight engraved plates as called for and one extra by Clevely; Portrait frontispiece, one other plate (The Encounter off Cadiz - in the night of the 3rd of July 1797....) six battle plans, facsimile of Nelson's handwriting. Inside pages with light browning throughout, otherwise very good condition. An uncommon book. Records found in Worldcat show 79 pages of appendix; the appendix in this copy ends on p.68 underneath which is "The End" followed by a printer's imprint at the bottom of the page. As well, this copy contains more plates than are recorded elsewhere., , Charnock was a naval volunteer, and his work is based largely on letters he had collected for a general naval history, many of which were supplied by Captain William Locker.
