Paradise Lost A Poem in Twelve Books (1770 complete In two volumes) lxxxvi, [27 critique] [3, 1 plate], 3-510, [1 blank]; [8, ]5-463, [184 index, 1 blank] and Paradise Regain'd: A Poem In Four Books To Which Samson Agonistes and Poems Upon Several Occasions [12,1 plate], 3-335, [1 blank]; [8] 386, [4 index, 1 blank] Lengthy one (1) page HOLOGRAPH letter by Newton on Milton requesting that information gathered by ''... Mr. Thyer ,the Manchester Librarian had made some observations on Milton ..., .....I wish I had been informed of this sooner that I might have made my application to you before this time for the work is now in press...'' . Newton later partly concludes the letter stating .....'' I shall continue here (Lichfiled) with my friends a fortnight longer till Monday and then I shall return to Grosvenor Street in London.....' Lichfield, Friday, Aug.25,1770'.laid in. (21 lines,, Four uniformly bound volumes in original sprinkled calf, gilt spine rules, black moroccan spine label with gilt lettering, covers modestly rubbed. Uniformly marbled end papers, previous own's bookplate. All plates present. Very Good with a couple of minor repairs at folds). Tight and crisp, a Very Good set, and, with the Newton (book editor) note quite rare! Thomas Newton ( 1704- 1782), bishop of Bristol, fellow of Trinity College, chaplain to George II, dean of St. Paul's,wrote works on the prophecies, sermons,an autobiography, but mostly remembered for editing Milton's works.
