James Mill, the father of political theorist John Stuart Mill, was born in Scotland in 1773. The elder Mill was a philosopher, economist, and political reformer in his own right, and he greatly influenced his son’s work. A prolific and clear writer, James Mill wrote five texts and over a thousand essays. He collaborated with philosopher Jeremy Bentham and economist David Ricardo, popularizing the ideas of Utilitarianism. Mill’s Elements of Political Economy is the principal text promoting Ricardian economics. He advocated religious tolerance, freedom of speech and press, and legal and penal reform.
