Book desription: New York.: Limited Editions Club., 1993.. This Edition Limited to 300 numbered copies of which this is #142. Signed by Balthus to Colophon.LEC Letter laid-in.. Handsomely bound by John von Isakovics in full titled Goatskin, dyed grey-green to evoke the Yorkshire Moors. Encased in an ultra-suede lined Soolander box with titled morocco label to spine.. A Very Fine, Pristine, apparently unread copy.. Thick Folio. 13" bx 17".. Spectacularly illustrated with Fifteen Lithographs by Balthus, printed from aluminum plates on fine Japanese paper in brown-toned black ink, mounted upon off-white mould-made Arches paper especially made for this Edition by the Arches mill in France and watermarked with the Balthus family crest. Remarkable Balthus lithographs,in which the artist deftly traces the psychologically complicated relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw using himself and Antoinette de Watteville, whom the artist later married, as models. With their slightly too large, infantalizing heads, and their air of strangled restraint, no book ever met a better-suited illustrator, nor served him so well.
