The Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech by Faulkner
First edition, Third Printing
New York: The Spiral Press, 1951. First edition, Third Printing. Near Fine. A Near Fine copy of William Faulkner's Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech, SIGNED BY WILLIAM FAULKNER. Faulkner, who lacked much in the way of a formal education and was, in his own words, "just a farmer who likes to tell stories", won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1949 and gave this acceptance speech in Stockholm on December 10, 1950. This pamphlet states that "Three thousand five hundred copies have been printed at The Spiral Press, New York in March 1951 for the friends of Random House and The Spiral Press". There were three printings (comprised, respectively, of 1500, 1000, and 1000 copies, for a total of 3,500 copies) of this speech and it is not likely that all of them have survived. Thus, this item is this relatively scarce in and of itself. This copy, having been SIGNED BY WILLIAM FAULKNER, is very scarce indeed. Considering his autograph to be a valuable asset, Faulkner rarely signed any books other than the Limited Editions of his works which were, of course, designed to be signed by him. Individuals who sent books to him on their own initiative requesting that he sign them were met with silence, and their books were simply piled up in a stack, never to be returned, much less signed. This copy is in Near Fine condition with some pink staining to the upper portions of the front and rear wraps (but not penetrating to the inside). There is a short piece of tape affixed to the inside of the rear cover to hold a short tear, a couple of other tiny tears at the edges, and some tiny wrinkles at the spine. Otherwise, this is a very nice copy, and especially nice in that it has been SIGNED BY WILLIAM FAULKNER. THIS BOOK IS ELIGIBLE FOR A DISCOUNT OF UP TO 20% OFF THE PRICE SHOWN IN THIS LISTING FOR ORDERS PLACED ON OR BEFORE DECEMBER 31, 2009. (Not available in combination with any other discounts.)
