Book description: London: Printed for J. and R. Tonson in the Strand, and R. Dodsley in Pall-Mall, 1742. First Edition thus. Full Calf. Fine. John Vanderbank. Large Quartos (29 x 23 cm; 11 1/4 x 9 1/8 in); xxxii, [8], viii, 90, [14], 355; xii, 388, plus a portrait of Cervantes and 68 finely engraved full-page plates by John Vanderbank. With a translator's preface; "Advertisement concerning the Prints," by John Oldfield, M. D.; and a reimpression of "The life of Michael de Cervantes Saavedra. Written by Don Gregorio Mayáns & Siscár [originally, J. and R. Tonson, 1738]. Handsomely rebound to style in mottled calf with a rolled vine boarder in blind on each board, the spines in seven compartments between raised bands ruled in gilt, with red morocco labels lettered in gilt in the second and fourth compartments, the date lettered in gilt in the seventh and the others tooled in blind. A fine wide-margined set, the bindings pristine with end papers renewed. Internally fresh and bright with the expected finger-soiling to some margins, very occasional light and scattered stains and foxing, (again, largely restricted to the margins), and the plates in particularly wel-preserved states. The First Edition of this translation, generally acknowledged as "being close in spirit to the original" as any yet published. Provence: Verso of the title page in volume one with the signatures of William Booth and (in less decipherable script) F. Hemberton (?), dated 1757. The first edition of Jarvis' translation.
