American Publishing, 1894. First American Edition. HARD COVER-NO DUST JACKET. VERY GOOD PLUS. 2 stories in 1 volume. Binding tight w/no looseness; spine slightly cocked. Signatures tight; attractive sienna brown cloth binding w/gilt lettering on front & spine, & black decoration on front & spine. Gilt & black are still vibrant; middle gilt decoration on spine w/Twain's name is somewhat faded. Covers are somewhat scuffed at top right front & lower left back, as well as various spots on balance of front & back covers but not spine; this appears to be a wearing-down of the finish on the cloth only & may have been caused by shelf as opposed to reader wear. All exposed corners are worn down to where threads are showing through as a light color, but only the lower front one is slightly bumped; it suggests the book was once dropped on that corner; there's a slight buckling of board there. 4 spine corners show wear but a bit more to where there's slight bit of fraying starting & very tiny area where boards are showing at 3 of 4 corners. Very little edgewear. No rips to the binding or interior pages. Faint, vaguely white smudge about 1/8th" at middle front of spine. Interior pages have occasional fingering smudges. Frontispiece has B&W photo of Twain w/a FACSIMILE of his signature underneath. Tissue page between photo & title page intact. Interior pages feature delightful, uncredited, B&W sketches in margins, some labeled "Warren" and "FMS." (Sketch of wine bottle on pg. 312 appears flipped by publisher; "FMS" is backwards as is wine label.) A few small foxing spots on final text page & its facing endpaper. Last 2 endpapers dogeared at bottom & now unfolded but creases remain. Page ends on all 3 sides are somewhat soiled by age & handling as would be expected on a 100+ year-old book that was lovingly read & cared for. No marks
