His holidays in Cornwall, the early passion for church architecture and his first attempt at verse-making. He Left Magdalen without a degree, was sacked as a private secretary to an Irish nobleman. He continued briefly and outrageously as a prep-schoolmaster, then found work closer to his heart on The Architectural Review.
