Book description: Boston: Geo. M. Smith & Co., 1873. First American edition, second and usual issue. Thick octavo. With illustrations. Original green cloth decorated in gilt and black, all edges gilt. Slight soiling to bottom and top of the front cover. Overall a bright copy in near-fine condition. Considerable confusion surround the relationship of the two Boston 1873 title-pages that can appear in this title Ð the James R. Osgood & Company title page, and this usual Geo. M. Smith & Co. one (which refers to the Osgood and indicates Òsold by description onlyÓ). The bindings of the two are nearly identitcal (the Osgood binding reads ÒUNDER THE SEAÓ and bears a gilt pictorial centerpiece of a jellyfish, whereas the Smith binding reads ÒUNDER THE SEASÓ with a centerpiece of Captain Nemo using a sextant.) The Osgood is a bit earlier and much scarcer. One theory behind this discrepancy is that the Osgood title page may have designated the subscription issue, and that the Smith one, being much less scarce, must have designated the subsequent trade issue. Another possibility is that most of the Osgood edition was consumed by a Boston fire. Taves & Michaluk V003.
