Book description: Susan Scarlett is the pen name for famous and popular writer Noel Streatfeild. This is one of her rarest titles. This book, Babbacombe's, was published by Hodder & Stoughton, Limited, London, so is UK edition. On copyright page it says First Published May 1941, Second Impression Feburary 1950. At bottom of copyright page it says printed in Great Britain for Hodder and Stoughton, Limited, by Richard Clay and Co., Ltd., Bungay, Suffolk. The plot to this book is delightful, especially for young adults. Babbacombe's is a large department store where Elizabeth Carson's father, George Carson, has been working as a clerk for much of his life. Elizabeth comes from a poorer but close-knit family and George is very excited that Elizabeth, upon graduation, will be working in "Gowns" as a beginner clerk at Babbacombe's. Elizabeth is not so happy about it. At first. However, she is a dutiful daughter with a good head on her shoulders and soon learns to enjoy her work. Even when a spoiled brat cousin, Dulcie, comes to live with them and has to share Elizabeth's room and, because she is jealous of Elizabth, tries to create a lot of trouble for Elizabeth (one thing I really liked about this book is, despite thinking that Dulice would eventually change or learn her lesson, she doesn't...Dulie stays rotten right through until the end of the book). Of course, part of Elizabeth's happiness at work stems from having met young Mr. David Babbacombe, a union her father, George, is dead set against, since he doesn't believe they can attain the same class as the Babbacombes, even though old John Babbacombe, the owner of Babbacombe's, came up through the ranks himself, so to speak....It is a delightful and very rare and extremely hard to locate book. This is hardcover, no dustjacket. The yellowish-beige colored boards are intact but are soiled and do show some obvious wear and tear, as well as wear and tear at edges here and there, bits of edges here and there on boards a little ragged (boards are more of a yellowish color than shown in photo, they just show up like that color in the light.) Cardboard showing a little at some corners. The spine is intact and secure enough with some give to spine. That's because inside covers at binding there is a little bit of obvious damage and here and there in book there is a bit of damage to inside binding. However, all pages are very secure, none are loose. There are a few smudges and some faint but visible age discoloration inside covers and there are a few small smudges inside on pages, but I read the book and I can state that all pages are securely intact and clean overall. All text is clean and easily readable. There are a few small tears at page edges, but there aren't many of those and these don't affect text at all. Book measures about 5 inches wide and about 7 1/2" tall and has 286 numbered pages. There is a slight slant to book, not major but you can see this. This is NOT ex-library. You can still read print on spine, but it is a bit faded.Book does show obvious wear and tear and looks bit aged, covers bit soiled so book looks rather dirty and a bit worn, but book still intact, covers intact, spine has some give but is also intact, all pages intact, pages clean overall and all text clean and easily readable. Still good for highly collectible reading copy of very rare, almost impossible to find and delightful book.
