The screenplay was written by novelist Frank Gruber, and was his sixth credited screenplay. The film, directed by Roy William Neill, starred Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, and was the penultimate film in the sequence of twelve Universal films in which the duo set high marks for their portrayal of Holmes and Watson.
