Lewis's extensive research for his "race novel" began, like so many research experiments in the past, with an expedition through the South. He met with virulent segregationists and went door to door in black sections of southern towns asking what people wanted most out of life given their circumstances. After some months of this pattern of delving into the race issu in this country, he returned to Minnesota to work on his novel's plan. Once complete, he moved to Vermont and began in March of 1946 to write this book. It took but five weeks to get a first draft in a complete enough form to show it to Bennet Cerf of Random House. Needless to say, by the time the book was ready for publication, the controversy brewing was Lewis the promoter's dream. The book was selected as a Literary Guild publication which guaranteed sales of 750,000! Lewis insisted that Random House send copies of the book to known vociferous segregationists and Cerf willingly complied' in late Spring of 1947 it hit the stores and was an immediate success.
