Book desription: San Francisco: H.S. Crocker & Co., [1881].. [4]pp., followed by twenty-eight lithographed views of Yosemite and the Big Trees, with explanatory caption facing each view save for the first. Original pictorial grey wrappers bound into later black leather, front cover gilt. A bit of light shelf wear. Some pencil notes on front wrapper, else internally very clean. Near fine. A very rare, abridged edition of E.S. Denison's 1881 book of views of Yosemite and the Mariposa Big Tree Grove. Several iconic images are featured, including Mariposa Grove, the Grizzly Giant, Half Dome, Bridal Veil Meadows, Vernal Falls, El Capitan, Sentinel Rock, and much more. The lithographs were made by Wyttenbach, most based on photographs taken by George Fiske, and were printed by Crocker. The preliminary pages include a timetable (dated 1881) for the two-day trip from San Francisco to Yosemite (and return schedule), with stops in Lathrop, Madera, and Clarks. There is also a map of the geysers and of rail and stage routes to the geysers, Yosemite, and the Big Trees, as well as a view of the Hotel del Monte in Monterey. Currey and Kruska note that "an abridged issue [of Denison's book] in pink wrappers with twenty-eight lithograph views has been noted, but not seen, by the compilers." This would appear to be that issue, save for the fact that the wrapper on this copy are grey and not pink. We can find no copies of this edition listed on OCLC, nor was it in Eberstadt's Catalog 124: YOSEMITE AND THE CALIFORNIA BIG TREE. Rare and interesting. CURREY & KRUSKA 100 (note).
