Book Description

London: Collins, 1968. First UK edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. Spinage, C. A.. The giraffe, the cameleopard of the ancients, the tallest of all animals has never before had a full length book devoted to it in English. It deserved one. The author is a photographer and naturalist working in East Africa. He has made a meticulous and fascinating study of the giraffe, tracing it from its remote ancestors through its appearance in primitive cave art and Egyptian painting to its first semi-historical connection with Rome, China and the Arabic world. He follows the curious path threaded by the giraffe through history; he wonders who can have led it on a three thousand mile journey to Samarkand in the Middle Ages, speculates on the voyage it must have made to Peking in the 15th century, and describes its triumphant arrival at Paris in 1827. As a naturalist, the author also discusses in detail the intricate physical characteristics of the giraffe. The illustrations are a brilliant selection drawn from Egyptian wall paintings, Persian and Chinese manuscripts, early European bestiaries, and the authors own photographs. 189 pages with appendices, bibliography and index. Jacket is price clipped; former owner's name on ffep. 8vo.
