First edition 1st printing, The omnibus edition of Sandburg’s classic children stories which he envisioned as US fairytales. This edition combines Rootabaga Stories and Rootabaga Pigeons in one volume with each paginated separately. Illustrations by Maud and Miska Petersham. This is probably a first printing of the omnibus version since copyright page states only – Copyright 1922, 1923 by Harcourt Brace and Company Inc. -with no additional printings or later dates indicated. The back panel of the dust jacket shows text of a letter from Frank Lloyd Wright to Carl Sandburg (the letter is from Wright's Autobiography which indicates that the actual date of this printing is after 1943). Price on front flap is $3.25. Bound in red boards with black lettering and a pictorial illustration on front board. Very good to Near Fine book with light edge wear and a slight inward bowing of the boards, previous owners’ bookplate mounted on front paste down hidden by front jacket flap, in a Good to Very good jacket that has light edge wear, several closed tears, some slight loss of material at spine ends, and with a mild sun toning of the spine. small piece – about 1 1/2” by 5” - of sun faded paper with Sandburg’s signature laid-in.
