MADAME BOVARY MURS DE PROVINCEby Flaubert, Gustave:
Paris: Michel Lévy Frères, 1857.. Two volumes. [8],[5]-232;[4],[233]-490pp. plus final blank and 36pp. publisher's catalogue dated "Mars 1857." Octavos. Full brown crushed levant, raised bands, spines lettered in gilt, plum morocco doublures, silk moiré endsheets and decorated paper liners, top and fore-edges gilt, lower edges untrimmed and gilt on the rough, by Noulhac, with the original printed wrappers bound in. Slight rubbing to joints, otherwise a fine set. First edition in book form (ordinary issue) of Flaubert's first novel, preceded by serial publication in the REVUE DE PARIS. This copy exhibits the first state of the dedication leaf, with 'Senart' rather than 'Senard.' There were also seventy-five copies printed on thick papier vélin, which are very rare. Upon its serial publication, Flaubert and the proprietors of the REVUE... were prosecuted on the grounds of offences against public morals, but after a sensational trial, were acquitted, leaving the way open for the book publication of what endures as one of the highpoints of 19th century world literature. A choice set. TALVART & PLACE (FLAUBERT) 1a. CARTERET I:263.
