The Century Edition: This beautiful four volume set, written by the Professor of History at Princeton University, is finely bound in half red leather and blue marbled boards w/ gilt rules to cover and untarnished gilt titles to spine; all four have straight, firm and tight bindings; each w/ a full color frontispiece from a painting w/ bright intact tissue guard; approximately 280 pages each; very tight clean and bright pages - appear unread; printed on thick high-quality paper, each book is illustrated w/ color and b/w plates of portraits, plates, engravings; five raised bands and a gilt "N" to red leather spines; boards and endpaper are marbled; No ex-libris plates, signatures or other markings; the head and tail of spines are mildly rubbed w/ some rubbing to some of the spine edges; a hint of rubbing to corners and some fore-edges; one volume has a bit more rubbing to three corners than the rest; each w/ gilt page tops; indexed; these beautiful volumes are an extremely well-preserved set, suitable for the most discerning collector; . boards : Common term for the covers of a hardbound book.
rubbing : Abrasion or wear to the surface. Usually
used in reference to a book's boards or dust-jacket.
Marbled boards : A hardcover book with a decorative, multi-colored paper on the outside covering.
jacket : Sometimes used as another term for dust jacket, a protective and often decorative wrapper, usually made of paper which wraps around the binding of a book
spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back.
raised band(s) : On leather bound books, the ridges that protrude slightly from the spine.
tight : Used to mean that the binding of a book has not been overly loosened by frequent use.
tail : The heel of the spine.
gilt : The decorative application of gold or gold coloring to a portion of a book. The edges of the text block, or an inlay in the front cover of the boards, for example.
frontispiece : A portrait or illustration on the page opposing the title page.
plates : Full page illustrations or photographs. Plates are printed separately from the text of the book, and bound in at production. I.e., they are not sewn as parts of gatherings.
endpaper : The double leaves bound into a book at the front and rear after printing. One side is glued to the inner portion of the boards (the paste-down) and the other is left loose (free endpaper).
folio : a large book size, generally 15" in height or larger.
