One of America's early successful engravers on steel and copper, Tanner lived and worked in Philadelphia from 1805 to 1845. The frontispiece was printed on a lighter weight stock than the rest of the volume and, as is usual, is browned. "Lydia R. Bailey, printer, no. 10, North Alley"--verso of title page.
