A Very Good copy, lacking the rare dust jacket, SIGNED BY JOHN LE CARRE. A nice copy of le Carré's very scarce second book, featuring le Carré's recurring character, George Smiley, in a detective story, le Carré's only book set outside the espionage community. Le Carré joined the British Army's Intelligence Corps in 1950 and, upon his return to England to study at Oxford, conducted secret assignments for MI5, seeking to obtain information on possible Soviet agents. He continued his work for MI5, and then for MI6, until the great success of "The Spy Who Came In from the Cold", at which time he left the secret service to write full time. It was while working for MI6 in Germany that le Carré wrote "A Murder of Quality". John le Carré is a pseudonym for the author's true name, "David John Moore Cornwell" and this book is signed by him on the title page "David Cornwell / aka / John le Carré". Cleverly constructed, Cornwell's pen name consists of his second forename "John" followed by "le Carré", meaning "the square" in French, as his last name. This is a Very Good, slightly canted, copy of le Carré's very scarce second book, with moderate edge wear and bumping to the corners, as well as a light scratch to the front board, a spot of staining here and there, and wearing a GAI certification sticker at the lower corner of the title page. Remarkably, there is only a touch of sunning to the spine. Quite uncommon in and of itself, the book is even harder to find signed, and here is signed using both the author's given name and his pseudonym. A SCARCE copy of le Carré's second book, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR.
