Book Description

London: Chapman and Hall, 1864. First edition. Half-Leather. Near Fine. A beautiful set bound from the original Parts by Riviere for Pickering of Piccadilly. The second novel in Trollope's famed Palliser series, which, along with his Barsetshire novels, form the foundation of his fame. The stunning half-leather bindings (a little shelf and edge wear) feature six gilt panels, beautifully printed and decorated. The top and bottom of each spine is also decorated in gilt. Each interior edge of the board leather is decorated by two gilt lines, with the leather enclosing the marbled boards. All edges of the page block, as well as the pastedowns and facing sides of the front and rear free endpapers, are marbled to match the boards. The book tells the tale of the beautiful and wealthy Lady Glencora who is forced to marry the the rising young politician Plantagenet Palliser (presumed heir to the great Duke of Omnium) rather than her true love, the worthless Burgo Fitzgerald who has her heart and would certainly waste her vast fortune. Lady Glencora becomes one of Trollope's greatest characters. A beautiful set.
