London: A. Islip, 1638 1511p. [20], 31, [31p.] includes 33 engravings of Tamerlane, Turkish Sultans, Sigismund as well as Bassa's bridge to cross the Danube. Original polished calf boards rebacked with full calf and morocco label with six large raised bands. Each chapter has elaborate engraved head and tailpieces. Also bound in at end of Knolles original massive volume is the collection of papers of Sir Thomas Rowe and Thomas Nabbes. Samuel Johnson and Sothey thought highly of Knolles' style and Byron said "Old Knolles was one of the first books that gave me pleasure when I was a child; and I believe it had much influence on my future wishes to visit the Levant and gave perhaps the Oriental colouring which is observed in my poetry. A very good copy with the engraved title page, with three original endpapers present (some with 17th century ink notes]. Text is clear with some discoloration, chips not extending to text, some worming along margins, chip on margin of p. 1252-1253 has loss of some of margin notes. A very tight binding with no leaves lacking. All in all a very good copy with all engravings bright including the bridge over the Danube. STC 15055. Blackmer 920.
