Emmett Dalton [1871-1937] began his career as a Kansas lawman before switching sides with his older brothers and robbing banks for a living. He is the only member of the infamous Dalton Gang to survive the 1892 attempt to rob two banks simultaneously in their hometown of Coffeyville, Kansas. Four members of the gang were killed, as well as four townsmen. Dalton, wounded by more than a dozen bullets, was sentenced to life in prison then pardoned in 1907 after serving 14 years behind bars. This first person account reads like a Zane Gray novel with Emmett presenting his unique role in, arguably, the most deadly street battle of the west. The moment a hunted man has definitely made up his mind that he will not be taken alive he has given a hostage to fate. He has signed his own death warrant. Its only a matter of time until it is served. When the Daltons Rode was a resounding hit when it was published in 1931. Three years after Emmetts death, Hollywood brought his tale to the silver screen in a popular movie, of the same name, starring Randolph Scott, Broderick Crawford and Andy Devine.
