New York: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc., 1933. Leather-look green cloth with decorative gilt borders, gilt ship's wheel decoration surrounds a large laid in ivory colored cameo of the author. There is a tiny bit of loss to one of the gilt borders. Gilt decorations on spine with red text blocks. Top of spine is frayed. Tips have wear. Top is dusty. There is a spray stain to outside pages and a tiny stain on bottom. 352 toned pages are clean. Pencilled price on fep. Synopsis
Set in the 1870s, this tale concerns the love of an English sea captain for the Spanish beauty Dona Rita. He carries Carlist munitions to Peninsular ports, she finances the project. Conrad recounts all the adventures of gun-running and the ever-threatening sea, but never loses his theme, the beautiful and transitory nature of love. Conrad treasured this story, and explained it as a fragment from his "buried youth."
