Extra illustrated edition. 8vo,. full painted vellum with gilt floral scrolls, painted portrait and initials, a.e.g. Dusty, hinges reinforced, upper cover slightly sprung, otherwise very good. A beautiful binding with the owner's initials painted on the front cover, and owner's signature on the ffep. Margaret Oliphant was a prolific 19th century author who began her career with submissions to the Blackwoods magazine. In 1859 she and her husband moved to Florence on account of her husband's delicate health but soon was forced to return to England upon her husband's death.

8vo : Short for Octavo, A book whose page size is approximately 12 inches by 9 inches. The size is based on a sheet of paper 25 inches by 38 inches, the size of paper traditionally used by book printers, which has been folded and cut into 16 pages..
Unfortunately often misunderstood to mean 8 volumes.

vellum : A fine quality of parchment made from hide produced for binding or sometimes a writing surface. Sometimes used to describe paper which has been made to resemble true vellum.
