A nice copy of Trollope's extremely scarce third novel, a story set during the great counterrevolution of the suppressed Catholics and Royalists in the Vendee region of France. The first impression of the book (lacking the half-title in Vol II-not called for in Vol I or in Vol III-and no catalogue). As the novel was not commercially successful, and only 500 copies were agreed to be printed, the book has become extremely scarce. This copy has been bound in half-leather with marbled boards and marbled pastdowns. The recto of the ffep is marbled as well. Copies in the original cloth are almost never seen and, as with Trollope's first two novels, Sadleir's advice applies: collectors not be too fastidious about condition with this title as they may never see more than one copy. A very nice copy of an extremely difficult book to find in any condition at all. An opportunity for the Trollope collector to distinguish his or her collection.
