Description
New York: Viking Penguin, 2001. Black marker remainder mark to bottom page edges, otherwise a clean, crisp copy. Dust jacket in new mylar cover.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Fine. 8vo - 8" - 9" Tall.
dust jacket : A protective and often decorative wrapper, usually made of paper which wraps around the binding of a book. 8vo : Short for Octavo, A book whose page size is approximately 8-10 inches tall. The size is based on a sheet of paper 25 inches by 38 inches, the size of paper traditionally used by book printers, which has been folded and cut into 16 pages..
Unfortunately often misunderstood to mean 8 volumes. remainder mark : Usually an ink marking of some sort which indicates that the book was designated a remainder. In most cases, it can be found on the edges of the text block in the form of a marker stripe or a stamp of some sort.
Remainder marks considerably lower the overall collectibility of a title, although, in some cases, they are acceptable to a collector. crisp : A term often used to indicate a book's new-like condition. Indicates that the hinges are not loosened. A book described as crisp will not have 'well-read' pages, i.e., where the book will naturally open to certain pages or sections.
Book summary
Mulisch's novel begins when a rabbi in late-16th-century rabbi in Prague tries to make a golem--a supernatural being who will keep the Jews from harm. Hundreds of years later, a modern-day scientist succeeds in doing something similar. The parallels between these two men, and the consequences of their actions, provide the plot for this tale about the ethics of science in the realm of birth and death.
