Dangerous Deceits" Exposed or The True Catholicismby James Empringham
Lynn Publishing Co.: Syracuse, NY, 1914. Hardcover. Good+. Good+ hardcover, no dust jacket as issued. James Empringham was one of the leaders of the Church Temperance Society of the Protestant Episcopal Church, a group that championed the Prohibition Movement in the US in 1917. He also served as vice president of the Anti-Saloon League. This particular work is Empringham's attack on what he viewed as the growing influence of the Catholic Church on the Anglican Church in England and abroad and the "dangerous" consequences associated with this "Catholic Revival". Small former owner bookplate present on the front paste down with the information inked out. No interior markings. Binding is solid with a slightly tender front hinge. The boards show a touch of foxing and light soil with some sunning and chipping in the cloth along the backstrip. A scarce and interesting work.
