Elbert Hubbard was the founder of Roycroft, an arts and crafts movement founded in New York in the mid 1890s. The artists and craftspeople were called Roycrofters, or members of the Roycroft Movement. Their Aurora, New York community now houses the Elbert Hubbard Roycroft Museum and is a National Historic Landmark. "A Message to Garcia" is the most famous piece Elbert Hubbard wrote, was an inspirational pamphlet based on an incident of the Spanish American was and designed to improve moral and inspire loyalty. (There was a film made in 1916 of A Message to Garcia.) Hubbard and his wife, suffragist Alice Moore Hubbard, died in the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915. (Ironically, Hubbard had previously written about a couple who died together in the sinking of the Titanic after the wife refused to leave her husband and get into a lifeboat. Hubbard praised their desire to stay together. Reports from Lusitania survivors Ernest Cowper wrote Hubbard's son, saying that the Hubbards made no attempt to enter lifeboats. "It was apparent that (Hubbard's) idea was that they should die together, and not risk being parted on going into the water." According to answer.com: "Although called the "Roycroft Press" by latter-day collectors and print historians, the organization called itself "The Roycrofters" and "The Roycroft Shops."
