London: Longmans Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown, 1820. First edition of this iteration. Plate volumes only. Five volumes of plates and one atlas. There are 1109 engraved plates on every subject from Agriculture to Zoology. The atlas is complete with 61 maps all double page and mounted on stubs (as almost always Map I is not present - " ÒIn 1778 [Abraham Rees (1743-1825)] re-edited George Lewis ScottÕs 1753 edition of Ephraim ChambersÕs Cyclopaedia [which was originally published in 1728] in four volumes of text, and one of platesÉHe later introduced much new material in a further edition in four folio volumes of text and one of addenda, index and platesÉ[1786-1788], which was reissued in 1788-1791. This scholarly work brought him the honour of election as a Fellow to both the Royal Society and the Linnean Society. The need however for a completely new work led him to plan the issue in parts (published regularly) of his The new cyclopaedia; or, Universal dictionary of arts and sciencesÉThe first part was issued on 2 January 1802, and the whole undertaking was completed in 44 quarto volumes (each comprising two parts), including four volumes of platesÉand one atlas volume, in August 1820. The encyclopedia was largely ReesÕs own work, and was especially strong in new and well-written biographical articlesÓ (Collison, pp. 109-110).
