Book Description

New York: Grolier Club, 1904. First edition. One of 325 copies printed on American handmade paper. Thick octavo with twelve full page engravings (one of which is in color). Publisher's full tan calf with gilt stamped panels on covers and spine, gilt spine lettering, gilt turn-ins. Small morocco bookplate of John Camp Williams. Upper tips a bit exposed and spine a bit dry and sunned. Overall, a very attractive and sturdy copy. From laid-in prospectus - "In this volume ten cartoons engraved in mezzotint, and published in London in 1774 and 1775, or thereabouts, are reproduced and described. These cartoons, humourous in character, depicted certain events which had recently taken place in the Colonies, and were known in England through the publication of letters from America printed in the Englis press. They are evidently the work of a pupil of Hogarth, and indicate extraordinary knowledge of the life, customs, and political conditions in the Colonies, as well as the existence in England of a strong sympathy with the sufferings inflicted on the Americans by the colonial policy of Parliament.
