Book desription: c. 1957. Tempera on paper. 10 1/4 x 25 1/2 inches visible. Framed. 17 3/4 x 32 3/4 inches. Ed Valigursky (b. 1926) has done speculative, futuristic designs for Popular Science since the early 1950's. He has also been a highly prolific Science Fiction artist for book covers and magazines . This "Atomic Car" was probably an illustration for Argosy, but more substantive information is welcome. Though more science fiction oriented in its origins, this car exemplifies the collective American dream about car design in the late 50's and early 60's. Fast, bright, powerful and luxurious with many attributes deriving from science fiction, the American car would be something never seen before. Very much unlike previous cars, with new shapes and bright colors inside and out, the new generation of American cars seemed to transform the lives of "ordinary" Americans, and did in fact change the nature of American life quite substantially.
