He then became actively interested in England's new ventures across the Atlantic. In 1606 he sailed with the first Jamestown settlers, and kept the settlement together through Indian raids, and famine. He became one of the prime movers in the founding of the New England colonies. He was captured by pirates and shipwrecked off the New England coast, and in 1616 he published a map of the coast. Smith was also famous for capturing the affections of Pocahontas and was saved from being clubbed to death. He also published the first practical handbook for seaman in the English language..
