Book desription: London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1885. Card Wrappers. Very Good. A Very Good or better copy, in the Publisher's original paper boards (card wrappers). This copy belonged to MICHAEL SADLEIR AND TO BARTON CURRIE (separately of course), and carries each of their bookplates. The Currie bookplate is affixed to the inside of the front wrapper and Sadleir's regal bookplate is affixed to the ffep, which also bears an unrelated presentation inscription to a Vicar. Currie's plate, being leather, has produced some offsetting to Sadleir's much larger plate and to the ffep. The spine has a bit of loss to the head and tail, and some cracking, but all letters are fully present. The front card wrapper bears evidence of removal of a piece of tape and the rear wrapper has a pink stain at the upper left corner, as well as a tear repaired by a leather patch on the inside of the rear wrapper, with some resulting offsetting to the rear free endpaper. Sadleir notes that an advertisement indicates that the story was to have been published both in cloth and in "paper boards" (i.e. card wrappers), but that he had never seen a cloth-bound copy. This small and delicate volume is housed in a custom-made clamshell box with a leather label. A very uncommon item, especially in this condition, and with the wonderful provenance of prior ownership. THE CURRIE / SADLEIR COPY.
