Tenebraeby Henham, Ernest
Book Description
First UK edition [although there was a Colonial Edition, it is not known if there was a US edition]. Original green pictorial cloth depicting full colour designs of an owl, bat and starry night. Blind-stamped device to rear. Spine titles in gilt. Floral endpapers. 329pp + 8pp rear catalogue, fore and lower edge untrimmed. A near fine copy of a very handsome book which is printed and laid out identically to Skeffingtons' publication of Richard Marsh's "The Beetle" which appeared in 1897; given the excellent press reviews and numerous reprints for the latter, it is probable that the publisher sought to capitalise upon this by producing "Tenebrae" which is in extremely similar format, though where Marsh had a beetle-like creature as his monster, Henham used spiders. "Tenebrae" is a heady, decadent tour-de-force of weird, subversive 'fin-de-siecle' horror at its very best, narrated in diary form by a murderer who becomes increasingly insane. The drug- and insanity visions he experiences of spiders, reanimated corpses and a vampiric paramour are almost unrivalled in weird literature, and compare favourably with the biting, swaggering prose of Vincent O'Sullivan and Arthur Machen. An obscure masterpiece of horror literature. A scarce book which is very uncommon in such sharp collectors' condition. Bookseller Terms of Sale
